Why Foster Care Training Is the Perfect Starting Point for Your Journey as a Carer

At Family Fostering Partners, we believe that foster care training is an essential for anyone hoping to become a foster parent. It’s designed to give you the confidence, knowledge, and skills to provide the best possible care. But what does this training involve, and why is it so important? Let’s break it down.

What is foster care training?

At Family Fostering Partners, our foster care training is bespoke, designed specifically for our foster parents and the children in their care. Prior to being approved as a foster parent, you will undertake Skills to Foster Care Training; designed to provide you with all of the information you need to know about fostering with Family Fostering Partners.

Once approved as a foster parent, we’ll guide you through other essential topics such as:

  • Understanding trauma and attachment: Learning how and why a child’s past experiences may affect their behaviour and emotions.
  • Safeguarding: Ensuring you know how to keep children safe at all times.
  • Paediatric First Aid: Giving you the tools to deliver high quality first aid if necessary.
  • Other training includes Internet Safety, Safe Care and Recording, Gro Brain, Valuing Diversity, Supporting Sensory Needs, The Teenage Brain, Understanding the Court Process and Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dyspraxia.

Our foster care training is interactive, supportive, and tailored for real-life situations. It isn’t about sitting through lectures; it’s about preparing you to succeed as a foster parent.

Why is training important for foster carers?

Becoming a foster carer is an incredibly rewarding role, but like most parenting journeys, you will face challenges. Training helps you feel prepared for different situations and gives you practical tools to manage them effectively. Here’s why training is essential:

  • Builds confidence; You’ll feel confident and capable with the right toolkit.
  • Protects you and any children in your care; Knowing policies and best practices keeps everyone safe.
  • Prepares for real-life scenarios; From school transitions to emotional outbursts, you’ll be equipped to respond with empathy and understanding.
  • Support; You’ll train alongside other Family Fostering Partners foster parents, enabling you to swap advice, tips and build a fostering community.

What are the benefits of foster care training?

The benefits of foster care training go far beyond the classroom. Here are just a few ways it helps you and the children you care for:

  • Better outcomes for children; Children thrive when their foster parents feel confident and informed.
  • Ongoing personal growth; Many foster parents tell us that training helps them not only as foster parents but also in their everyday lives.
  • Connection with other carers; You’ll meet others on the same journey, building a network of support and friendship.
  • Access to continuous development; At Family Fostering Partners, training doesn’t stop after approval. We offer regular workshops and specialist courses to help you grow. You’ll also have access to Foster Talk who provide external webinars and training.

Starting your fostering journey can feel daunting, but training ensures you never feel alone. With the right knowledge, support, and guidance, you can make an incredible difference in a child’s life.
